Breathing Room

Peace-Is-Every-StepI have felt the need lately to return to Thich Nhat Hanh’s book Peace Is Every Step for reminders of how to find peace during this scary time. In his book this master of mindfulness points out that most of us have a designated place at home for most of our daily activities: a space for sleeping, eating, cooking, bathing. But many of us may not have a “breathing room.” Nhat Hanh suggests, however, we all would benefit from such a space, a place we can retreat to when we need to take a few deep breaths. This space could be an area for a child or adult who needs a “time out” to “tune in” to a place of safety and solitude.

Most families are spending more time together at home right now, which is a blessing in many ways! However, “too much” togetherness can wear nerves thin and make it difficult when we need to focus attention elsewhere. Perhaps you don’t have a whole room you can devote to this. But maybe you can designate a certain chair or certain corner of a room where anyone with whom you are “sheltering in place” may go for a few moments to enjoy some peace and quiet.

If you’re so inclined, try talking with your “COVID crew” about establishing a place and process that works for you. Nhat Hanh suggests ringing a bell (if you don’t have one, there’s an app for that!) when you enter your “breathing room” so others know to respect your peace and quiet. The sound of the bell may also encourage others to take a few deep breaths!

Once safely ensconced in your “breathing room,” you can practice conscious breathing, journal, pray/meditate, or find other ways to reestablish a sense of calm. If you aren’t sure where to start, start simply. With each cycle of breath, simply repeat to yourself:

Breathing in, I calm my body

Breathing out, I smile.

Thich Nhat Hanh

Stay with your conscious breathing until your face softens, your ability to smile returns, and you regain a little peace of mind. It may help to visualize people, places, and things that bring you joy. Tap into the place within you that is naturally peaceful and ever joyful, no matter what is happening in the world around you. Give it a try and you might find that place is just a few breaths away. Namaste
